## Key points

- Democrats regain a majority of US governorships.
- Gina Hinojosa unseats Greg Abbott in Texas.
- Keisha Lance Bottoms makes history in Georgia.

## Summary

Democrats won governorships in Texas, Georgia, Iowa and Ohio, turning voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump and Republican policies into a broad rebuke of the GOP. The victories give Democrats a majority of US governorships for the first time in two decades and could strengthen state-level resistance to Trump’s second-term agenda.

Keisha Lance Bottoms’ win in Georgia makes her the first Black woman elected governor in the United States. In Texas, Gina Hinojosa defeated Greg Abbott despite being heavily outspent on advertising; Democrats also defeated Republican candidates in Iowa and Ohio. Thirty-six states held gubernatorial elections, and Democrats are set to hold at least 27 of the 50 governorships in 2027.
