- The new majority can block Trump’s nominees and federal judicial appointments.

## Summary

Democrats won control of the US Senate, overcoming expectations that the party faced long odds after the 2024 election. The result matters because it gives them the power to block President Donald Trump’s nominees for senior administration posts and federal judgeships, including potential Supreme Court appointments.

The party also flipped control of the House on election night. In the Senate, Democrats gained seats in North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Kansas and Iowa, while holding seats in swing states including Georgia and New Hampshire. The article describes the outcome as a major shift in power.
