Depay defends music video showing Corinthians HQ on fire
Memphis Depay has defended a music video depicting Corinthians’ headquarters on fire, saying it is artistic expression and opposing all violence. The release has attracted scrutiny because it follows a public dispute over his contract and comes while supporters protest over the Brazilian club’s financial and governance problems.
Depay said the video for ‘Don’t Panic’ was filmed months ago and was released a day after he helped Corinthians reach the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals. Corinthians initially chose not to renew his deal, but he later agreed a substantial reduction in what he was owed to sign until 2028; reports say he waived about R$21m (£2.9m) of R$75m (£10.6m) owed, with the new two-year deal worth R$135m (£19.1m).
- Depay says the controversial video is art, not support for violence.
- The imagery followed his contract dispute with Corinthians.
- He accepted reduced payments to remain until 2028.
