## Key points

- DeSantis called the GOP’s national losses near an “extinction-level event”.
- Florida was the only top-10 populous state with a Republican governor.
- Amendment 3 passed with about 62% of the vote.

## Summary

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described Republicans’ national election losses as “close to an extinction-level event”, while saying Florida had held firm. The results have intensified questions about the party’s direction and DeSantis’s possible 2028 presidential ambitions.

Florida was the only one of the 10 most populous states with a Republican governor, according to DeSantis. He credited the state’s record in office and Amendment 3, which passed with about 62% of the vote and raises homestead property tax exemptions from $50,000 to $250,000 by 2028. A strategist said DeSantis may be positioning himself apart from the Trump-led party; the article also cited major Republican setbacks in states including Texas and Kansas.
