‘Descendants’ Franchise Expands With Movie Featuring Iconic Disney Sidekicks
Disney has announced Hidden Heroes: A Descendants Story, a new Disney Channel and Disney+ film that shifts the franchise’s focus from the children of heroes and villains to the descendants of well-known Disney sidekicks. The music-and-dance film will follow recruits at Sidekick Academy as they face a villainous threat without help from heroes or their parents, extending a commercially successful franchise with a new perspective on familiar stories.
The cast includes Dior Goodjohn as Genie’s daughter, Momona Tamada as Yzma’s daughter, Jacob Rodriguez as Kronk’s son, Eva Fossaceca Smedley as Merryweather’s daughter and Harry Jones as Lumiere’s son. Directed by Jude Weng and written by Tamara Chestna, Eydie Faye and Emma Fletcher, the film begins production next week; its announcement follows July’s Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, which Disney says was its most-viewed film globally on Disney+ from 17 to 27 July and whose soundtrack reached 50.8 million streams worldwide.
