## Key points

- Kyle Kennedy, 42, died in Massachusetts; her cause of death is under investigation.
- Her death adds to decades of loss across the Kennedy family.
- The article recounts why some relatives have spoken of a “curse”.

## Summary

Kyle Kennedy, a 42-year-old member of the Kennedy family, died at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, on 21 September. Her cause of death has not been disclosed and is under investigation; her death adds to a long series of bereavements that have fuelled talk of a “Kennedy curse”.

The article traces that history through the 1999 plane crash that killed John F Kennedy Jr, Carolyn Bessette and Lauren Bessette, as well as later deaths in the family from illness, accidents and overdose. Kyle was the daughter of Michael Kennedy, who died in a skiing accident in 1997, and leaves two children; a twin died shortly after birth. The article also recounts Joan Kennedy’s reported comment to Jackie Kennedy after Ted Kennedy survived a 1964 plane crash, asking whether the family’s misfortunes could be coincidence.
