DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced the results of "Operation Rotten Apple," a 30-day federal enforcement operation in New York, saying it had led to the arrest of more than 2,100 people deemed public safety threats. At a Tuesday press conference, he sharply criticised New York's Democratic leadership, including Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing them of obstructing federal immigration enforcement and putting residents at risk through sanctuary policies.

Mullin highlighted several cases of foreign nationals with violent criminal histories, including a 39-year-old Indian national wanted by Interpol over an alleged rape in Germany, and a 50-year-old Ukrainian citizen convicted of kidnapping, weapons offences and murder. He accused New York politicians of securing the release of more than 13,000 undocumented immigrants and criticised Hochul for ending 287(g) agreements that allow local police to work with federal agents, while claiming 80% of the public supports stronger law enforcement cooperation. He also warned that federal agents could be sent in greater numbers to New York and other non-cooperative cities.
