Dickie Bird memorabilia to be auctioned
More than 150 items from the personal collection of legendary cricket umpire Dickie Bird are to be auctioned next week, offering fans the chance to own a piece of his career. Born in Barnsley in 1933, Bird officiated in 66 Tests, 76 one-day internationals and three World Cup finals before his death last year at the age of 92, and the sale marks his family's efforts to catalogue and share his extensive archive.
The 167-lot collection, handled by auctioneers Budds, spans his early days as a county cricketer with Yorkshire and Leicestershire through to his storied umpiring career, and includes team sheets, scorecards, match-worn blazers, family portraits and more than 200 match ties. Highlights include an Australian international cap worn by Geoff Marsh, expected to fetch around £3,500, a West Indies cap worn by Joel Garner, estimated at over £1,500, and several of Bird's iconic white umpire's coats. His niece, Rachel Wyatt, said the items reflect links to 53 countries and that the family hopes fans worldwide will get the chance to bid, while some personal photographs, including those from his OBE investiture, will remain with the family.
