Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has confirmed he will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is accused of murdering his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. The decision follows consultation with Reiner's siblings, Jake and Romy, and reportedly reflects the late couple's own opposition to capital punishment. It means Reiner, if convicted, faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Reiner, 33, is accused of fatally stabbing his 79-year-old father and 70-year-old mother at their Brentwood home on 14 December 2025, the night after the family attended a party at Conan O'Brien's house where he reportedly behaved erratically. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder with special circumstance allegations, including lying in wait and use of a deadly weapon, and is being held without bail. Hochman said he weighed mitigating and aggravating factors before concluding capital punishment was not appropriate, while Jake and Romy are separately seeking to keep court transcripts sealed. Reiner is next due in court in October, with a further hearing planned over his bid to access a $1.5 million trust fund for his legal defence.
