Wrexham’s 2-1 home defeat to Birmingham City has intensified concerns about their defending after two poorly defended headers proved decisive. Manager Phil Parkinson described them as among the softest goals his side have conceded during his tenure, while captain Dom Hyam said Wrexham had been uncharacteristically easy to score against. The result leaves them without a win or clean sheet in four matches this season, making defensive improvement an immediate priority.

The concerns extend from last season, when Wrexham conceded 65 Championship goals, with only five teams allowing more, and conceded at least twice in 22 of 46 league matches. They also made 29 defensive errors leading to shots and faced 203 attempts on target, despite mitigating factors including promotion from League One and changing defensive combinations. This season’s back three has been more consistent, but Parkinson suggested transfer uncertainty may have affected the team, while Hyam called for a more determined, “horrible” approach before Wednesday’s match at Millwall.
