Dog food recalled after reports of pets losing their sight

The Guardian · 1 hour ago

The dog food brand Years has recalled all of its fresh meals after some customers reported that their pets developed a painful eye condition, sudden bilateral dry eye, which can lead to blindness if untreated. The company, which delivers "personalised" meals via subscription and also sells through retailers including Pets at Home, has told owners to stop feeding the meals immediately and not to donate, sell or otherwise pass them on, and has linked the issue to a recipe change involving buckwheat, an ingredient it added to its meals several months ago.

Years said that as of the early hours of Wednesday it had received 192 reports of "potential, yet unverified, eye issues" from roughly 40,000 customers, up from 57 suspected cases reported the previous Sunday. The condition, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, stops dogs producing tears and can leave eyes sore, inflamed and dry, with the Kennel Club warning it can cause visual problems and blindness if not managed properly; some affected owners say their pets are not responding well to treatment. A Facebook group tracking cases had passed 2,100 members by Wednesday, and a separate group has been set up to explore possible legal action, while Years says it issued the recall as a precaution rather than because causation has been proven.
