## Key points

- Sheffield councillors will consider new dog control powers.
- Owners could face fines for failing to carry poo bags.
- The proposal also covers dogs off leads near schools and playgrounds.

## Summary

Sheffield City Council will consider proposals that could allow enforcement officers to fine dog owners who do not carry poo bags or fail to clear up after their pets. The plan also targets dogs being let off the lead near playgrounds and primary schools, with councillor Mark Rusling saying cleaner pavements would help people use public spaces comfortably.

Rusling said the proposal would not mean officers routinely questioning every dog owner, but would encourage consistent behaviour and involve learning from schemes elsewhere. Residents interviewed near the city centre and Norfolk Park supported the idea, saying they carry bags and want cleaner streets. Councillors are due to discuss the motion at a full council meeting.
