Dolly Parton’s music saw a sharp rise in Spotify listening following her death at the age of 80, reflecting widespread public mourning for the country singer, songwriter and cultural figure. The surge also underlines the enduring popularity of her catalogue, with several of her best-known songs reaching the top of Spotify’s US daily chart.

Spotify said Parton’s global streams rose by more than 1,260% on 25 August compared with the previous week’s daily average, while US streams increased by 2,320%. “Jolene” and “9 to 5” ranked second and third in the US chart, while “Islands in the Stream” reached eighth; less frequently streamed songs recorded even larger percentage increases. Tributes came from figures including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Paul McCartney, while her estate said a biopic, documentary series and scripted series remain in development.
