## Key points

- Trump approved the sale of 500 Patriot interceptors to Ukraine.
- Canada and Europe are to fund the £1.6 billion deal.
- Zelensky says deliveries may take years to begin.

## Summary

Donald Trump has approved the sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 interceptor missiles to Ukraine, following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s appeals for faster air-defence supplies. The deal could strengthen Ukraine’s ability to protect cities and infrastructure from Russian missile attacks, but Zelensky said deliveries may not begin for several years, potentially delaying help when it is needed.

The sale is valued at £1.6 billion and is to be funded entirely by Canada and European countries, according to the US State Department. Zelensky requested a winter support package of 100 interceptors a month, saying Russian attacks on energy infrastructure continue daily; he also proposed that allies transfer missiles from their current stocks and replenish them later.
