## Key points

- Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as chief of staff.
- The appointment follows Republican losses in the midterms.
- Miller helped shape Trump’s hard-line immigration policies.

## Summary

Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles from Monday, 9 November. The change is the first major staffing move after Republican losses in the midterm elections and suggests Trump intends to press ahead with his agenda and confront expected investigations.

Miller, previously deputy chief of staff, helped shape the administration’s immigration and deportation policies, including ICE raids that sparked protests. Analysts linked those policies and threats to declining Republican support among Latino voters, while Wiles said she would move to Trump’s political operation after serving as the first woman to hold the chief of staff role.
