## Key points

- Fox News has cut ties with anchor Maria Bartiromo amid a Trump-related dispute.
- She allegedly leaked internal guidance to the White House, breaching her contract.
- Trump publicly backed her; her lawyer disputes she was fired at all.

## Summary

Fox News has parted ways with veteran anchor Maria Bartiromo, ending months of tension over her increasingly close ties to Donald Trump and her drift from business reporting into overt punditry. The network described the split as "a business decision" and offered little explanation, but Bartiromo is said to have leaked internal guidance intended for Fox Business producers to the White House, a potential breach of her employment terms that reportedly proved the final straw for executives. Trump publicly criticised the move, warning that Bartiromo's large fanbase "will not be happy", a comment that risks further straining relations between the president and the network.

Bartiromo, who had not appeared on air since 9 August, fronted three programmes, including "Sunday Morning Futures" and "Mornings With Maria", and had drawn scrutiny after apologising on-air in June for a guest's false claims about a Utah data-centre project. Her lawyer, Bryan Freedman, has strongly disputed reports of a firing, insisting she remains employed and threatening legal action, though Fox has maintained the departure stands. Ratings data cited by Nielsen show her flagship business show had also been losing ground to CNBC's "Squawk Box", particularly among the 25-54 advertiser demographic, adding a commercial dimension to the network's decision.
