Drake Maye and the New England Patriots suffered a season-opening 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, whose defence sealed the win with a fourth-quarter interception in the end zone. The result was particularly galling for New England, as it came at Lumen Field on the night Seattle unveiled its Super Bowl banner from a championship won at the Patriots' expense, and after Maye had entered the season as an MVP contender following last year's run to Super Bowl LX.

Maye finished 23-of-33 for 178 yards and a touchdown, but three interceptions proved decisive, including a late fourth-down throw into the end zone that cornerback Josh Jobe hauled in acrobatically to secure victory. Seattle's win was aided by backup quarterback Drew Lock, who stepped in after Sam Darnold left with a hip injury and went 16-of-22 for 187 yards and a touchdown, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba racking up eight catches for 122 yards including a 45-yard score. The Patriots were further hampered by an ankle injury to new receiver A.J. Brown, who exited early in the game.
