Public records and reporting are undermining working-class claims made by Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, whose accounts of his family's immigrant background, housing and employment have contradicted documented evidence. The discrepancies matter because Gordillo has repeatedly used his personal story to justify his socialist politics, and critics argue the gap between his public image and his actual circumstances exposes a broader pattern of "phony" working-class narratives among some Democratic figures.

A 2021 obituary shows Gordillo's grandfather emigrated from Peru in 1958 to work as a psychiatrist and later led the Ohio Psychiatric Association, undercutting Gordillo's claim that his parents "had nothing". Separately, he told the New York Times he rented a modest Crown Heights flat, when he was reportedly living in a $1.4 million townhouse owned by his father, and he continues to describe himself as a "union electrician" despite being dismissed from his International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers apprenticeship in March for failing to attend required work and classes. Neither Gordillo nor the NYC-DSA responded to requests for comment.
