A sequel script to "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" has been written but may never reach cinemas, co-director Jonathan Goldstein has revealed, citing the high cost of producing such films. Speaking to ScreenRant, Goldstein said the team was hired to write the follow-up and would relish making it, praising the returning cast, but admitted it may not "see the light of day for a number of financial reasons." The update matters because it confirms, for the first time, that concrete sequel plans exist despite years of uncertainty following the 2023 film's disappointing box office.

The original film, directed by Goldstein and John Francis Daley and starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis, was a critical success with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, but grossed only $205.46 million worldwide against a roughly $150 million budget shared by Paramount and Hasbro's eOne. Grant has previously questioned the lack of pre-release market research. Goldstein and Daley are now working on other projects, including the action thriller "Renegades" and a new "Star Trek" film, while earlier D&D screen outings—a poorly received 2000 film and two Syfy television sequels—performed even worse commercially.
