Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam has become a streaming success on Netflix, reaching number five on the platform's global Top 10 Movies chart, despite its poor theatrical performance and critical reception. The 2022 DC film's newfound popularity is drawing fresh attention, particularly because it featured Henry Cavill's return as Superman in a post-credits scene, which sparked fan interest in how the character might have featured in Superman's future within the DC Universe before James Gunn took over the franchise's direction.

The film serves as an origin story in which Black Adam is freed from 5,000 years of imprisonment and eventually becomes the protector of Kahndaq, whilst also introducing the Justice Society with actors including Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate and Aldis Hodge as Hawkman. Despite its streaming success, Black Adam generated only $393.5 million at the global box office and received poor critical reviews, earning just 39 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was originally marketed as positioning Black Adam as a rival to Superman who would "change the hierarchy of power" in the DC Universe.
