E-bikes and docking stations heading to Sheffield’s streets – at cost of £11m

The Star (Sheffield) · 4 hours ago

Sheffield is launching two major electric bike initiatives totalling £11 million in investment. One scheme at £2 million will allow residents to acquire bikes for personal commuting use, whilst the city council is separately developing a £9 million programme featuring 900 hire bicycles accessible through docking stations across the city. Both systems will include safety equipment and GPS technology to address persistent problems of theft and vandalism.

The investment forms part of the council's broader effort to reduce vehicle traffic and improve urban mobility in a city with steep topography. This follows an earlier bike-sharing venture that struggled with widespread vandalism and abandoned bicycles. The hire component is expected to launch in early 2027, beginning with 275 bikes in March and expanding toward the full fleet if initial results prove successful. These initiatives represent a continuation of substantial public spending on cycling infrastructure, adding to over £27 million invested in recent years.

  • Sheffield plans £11m investment in e-bikes: £2m for purchase/loan programme, £9m for 900-bike hire system with street docking stations
  • New bikes include helmets, locks, and GPS tracking to prevent theft and vandalism that undermined a previous bike-sharing scheme
  • Initiative aims to cut city centre traffic by a fifth and support sustainable commuting on hilly terrain, with hire scheme launching early 2027
