Bolton Octagon has revived Ayub Khan Din's East Is East, thirty years after the play about a mixed-race family navigating 1970s Britain first opened at Birmingham Rep before becoming a Bafta-winning film. Director Kash Arshad's touring production, staged just miles from the story's Salford setting, is praised for drawing out the script's comedy while preserving its emotional nuance about growing up between cultures, with the reviewer noting its themes remain strikingly relevant amid contemporary debates about identity and belonging.

The production features an "exceptional cast", led by Samantha Power as matriarch Ella in what is described as an award-worthy performance, and Bhasker Patel as patriarch George, whose smaller physical presence than Om Puri's film portrayal is said to make his outbursts feel more like the frustration of a powerless man than outright tyranny. Maya Dhokia also stands out as the family's only daughter. The show runs at Bolton Octagon until 3 October before touring to Glasgow's Citizens Theatre (7-17 October), Derby Theatre (20-24 October) and Salisbury Playhouse (3-14 November).
