Eckersley hat-trick as Wigan sink Huddersfield

BBC Sport · 11 hours ago

Zach Eckersley scored a hat-trick as Wigan Warriors overcame stubborn resistance from bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield Giants to win 24-10 in Super League, moving Wigan up to second and within two points of the summit. The result extended Wigan's winning run to eight matches, while Huddersfield, who had lost 11 straight games before kick-off, suffered further setbacks off the pitch this week including injuries to three players for the season and the resignation of long-serving chairman Ken Davy.

Huddersfield led early through Taane Milne before Wigan responded with tries from Oliver Partington and Eckersley to lead 10-4 at half-time. Jacob Gagai's try levelled the scores after the break, but Huddersfield's discipline faltered when Joe Greenwood was sin-binned for dissent, allowing Adam Keighran's penalty and a late Eckersley double to seal victory. Eckersley's treble took his season tally to 19 tries, while referee Matty Lynn also sin-binned two Huddersfield players, Tui Lolohea and Shea O'Connor, for a first-half altercation.
