At the Variety Lounge event during the Edinburgh International Film Festival, directors competing for the Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence shared candid stories about the chaos and challenges of making their first features. Held at Edinburgh's Caledonian Hotel and supported by VisitScotland, the discussion highlighted both the hardships and the deep satisfaction that come with debut filmmaking, with several directors describing the experience as addictive despite its difficulties.

Eleven directors behind the ten films in official competition took part, with all but three presenting their feature debuts. Dutch director Thom Lunshof recounted near-disastrous scenes shooting his sci-fi film "First Zone" on water, including drowning actors and runaway boats, while US filmmaker Tyler-Marie Evans described an emotionally intense shoot for "Pretty Babies" that reminded her of the privilege of directing. Co-directors Ollie Gardner and Jake Harvey, who made "The State of Us" together as best friends, spoke about sharing the burdens of independent filmmaking, from creative battles to necessary compromises.
