## Key points

- Egypt have replaced Hossam Hassan with Ali Maher.
- Hassan’s record was 21 wins in 38 matches.
- Egypt face Malawi twice in qualifiers this month.

## Summary

Egypt have parted ways with coach Hossam Hassan and appointed Ali Maher to lead the national team, the Egyptian Football Association said. The decision follows a review of recent events, despite Hassan having signed a contract extension through 2030 after taking Egypt to the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

Egypt earned their first World Cup win against New Zealand and beat Australia on penalties before losing 3-2 to Argentina after leading. Scrutiny also followed a September goalless draw with Angola and Hassan’s substitution of Mohamed Salah; Hassan left after 38 matches, with 21 wins, 10 draws and seven defeats. Maher, 52, takes over after coaching Ceramica Cleopatra, ahead of two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Malawi this month.
