Elanga and Wissa strike as Newcastle extend Spurs’ miserable start to season

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-0 in Spurs’ first home Premier League match of the season, extending the home side’s difficult start despite a summer of high-profile spending. Tottenham were the stronger team before half-time but failed to convert their chances, then faded after the interval as Newcastle became more compact and assertive.

Anthony Elanga opened the scoring shortly after the hour with a composed left-foot finish following a long pass from Nico González and Amar Dedic’s assist. Yoane Wissa added a second after a Tottenham-conceded corner in the 72nd minute, while Newcastle’s new signings also included González, goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek and Dedic; Spurs fielded several recruits, including £116m Sandro Tonali and £60m Omar Marmoush.

  • Newcastle won 2-0 at Tottenham.
  • Elanga and Wissa scored after half-time.
  • Spurs’ new signings could not prevent defeat.
