Emmy Overachiever Jason Bateman on Whether He Considers Himself an Actor or Director First

Variety · 2 hours ago

Jason Bateman has become this year's Emmy "overachiever," picking up four nominations across acting, directing and producing for two different limited series. Speaking on Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast, he reflected on balancing his dual identity as actor and director, saying the two disciplines have always coexisted for him rather than one taking precedence over the other.

Bateman is nominated for lead actor and directing in a limited series for Netflix's "Black Rabbit," and for supporting actor and executive producer on HBO Max's "DTF St. Louis." He explained that his early years acting as a child gave him the chance to observe the technical craft around him, which drew him towards directing. He also discussed his career trajectory from child acting roles through the lean years before "Arrested Development," and on to later successes including "Ozark" and his "SmartLess" podcast, while the episode also touched on the wider Emmy race as Phase 2 voting continues.
