## Key points

- Alex Edelman says the Kennedy Center has become harder for many performers to use.
- He says only three headlining comedians appeared there this year.
- The Kennedy Center Honors will move to Capital One Arena on 7 December.

## Summary

Comedian Alex Edelman says President Donald Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center has made it difficult for performers who do not support Trump to appear there. He fears his 2024 show may have been his last at the venue, and argues the changes are narrowing a national arts institution’s role.

Edelman says only three headlining comedians performed at the centre this year, all of whom had publicly supported Trump. He also points to the planned closure of much of the main building for renovations, amid a dispute over renaming it, and says the centre’s programming had been $40 million in the black during the Biden administration’s final year. The Kennedy Center Honors are due to move to Capital One Arena on 7 December, the first time the ceremony has been held elsewhere.
