Emmys: ‘Widow’s Bay’ Leads All New Shows With 19 Nominations

The Hollywood Reporter · 1 month ago

Apple TV's horror-comedy series Widow's Bay has emerged as the biggest breakout among new shows at the 2026 Emmy nominations, securing 19 nods in total. These include recognition in major categories such as best comedy series, lead actor for Matthew Rhys, writing for creator Katie Dippold and directing for Hiro Murai. The haul makes it the strongest-performing debut series of the year and the most-nominated comedy after returning front-runner Hacks, a notable feat in a season where new series generally struggled to gain traction.

The show stars Rhys as Tom Loftis, mayor of a fictional, possibly haunted New England island town, across a 10-episode debut season praised for its inventive tone and structure. Despite arriving with little fanfare amid higher-profile Apple launches, strong reviews, celebrity endorsements from the likes of Guillermo del Toro and Ben Stiller, and growing word of mouth propelled it forward, alongside a leading five Television Critics Association nominations. Cast members including Kate O'Flynn, Stephen Root, Dale Dickey and guest stars Betty Gilpin and Hamish Linklater were also recognised, while the show scored widely in technical categories. Notably, the acclaimed final three episodes were ineligible this cycle after airing in the 2027 awards window due to an unusual scheduling move.

  • Apple's Widow's Bay leads all new shows with 19 Emmy nominations.
  • Matthew Rhys is a front-runner in the lead comedy actor race.
  • Only Hacks earned more comedy recognition this year.
