BP has put its UK North Sea oil and gas business up for sale, potentially ending more than 60 years of direct production in the region by the company. The move is part of a wider effort to streamline BP and focus investment on higher-value opportunities, though the company says it will continue operating the assets safely during the sales process.

The business has five production hubs—two in the central North Sea and three west of Shetland—and employs about 1,100 people. It produced 117,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day in 2025, compared with BP’s total daily production of 2.3 million barrels, and could reportedly be valued at about £2 billion; BP employs roughly 13,960 people across the UK.
