Engadget Indie Pitch: ‘VILE: Exhumed’ physical edition
Engadget's Indie Pitch series has spotlighted a physical edition of VILE: Exhumed, a horror game by solo developer Cara Cadaver of Final Girl Games, which was recently announced. The game casts players as an investigator exploring the desktop of an abandoned 1990s-era PC to uncover the disappearance of adult film actress Candy Corpse, drawing on found-footage horror conventions to explore themes of parasocial obsession and misogynistic entitlement. The release matters as an act of reclamation for Cadaver, who says the game drew on personal trauma, following an incident last year in which VILE was caught up in a wider Steam censorship crackdown.
Cadaver, who has worked on the game solo for six months to a year, described the physical edition as a chance to regain creative control and revisit the game's characters, Candy and Molly, giving them greater identity through the packaging design. She said the game's unflinching, disturbing content stems directly from her own experiences of trauma and violation, which she processed through the game's imagery and narrative, and that this grounding in reality is why many players, particularly women, found it so affecting.
