## Key points

- England beat Mexico 3-2 at the Azteca despite an early red card.
- Bellingham scored twice and Kane converted a penalty.
- Henderson injured his wrist celebrating; a quarter-final now awaits.

## Summary

England produced one of their most memorable World Cup knockout performances, defeating Mexico 3-2 in a dramatic last-16 tie at the Estadio Azteca. Reduced to 10 men after Jarrel Quansah's early red card for a challenge on Jesus Gallardo, the Three Lions mounted an impressive comeback, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice and captain Harry Kane converting a penalty. The result marked Mexico's first ever World Cup defeat at their home stadium and ranks among England's finest away victories in tournament history.

England coach Thomas Tuchel questioned the standard of refereeing at the tournament following the match. The celebrations came at a cost: midfielder Jordan Henderson sustained a serious wrist injury during the festivities, which Tuchel said required medical attention and saw him carried away on a stretcher, while Kane was left hoarse after the animated celebrations and interviews. The win sets up a quarter-final against a formidable opponent, with the squad and supporters—including Kate Kane and Megan Pickford in the stands—celebrating a performance many regard as iconic.
