- Argentina now face Spain in the New York final
- Tuchel's late substitutions and tactics heavily criticised, including by Rooney

## Summary

England's World Cup campaign has ended in a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta, with the South Americans advancing to face Spain in the final in New York. England had taken the lead but conceded late on, a collapse that players, pundits and supporters have called one of the most painful defeats in the nation's football history, reviving familiar debates about England's ability to close out major knockout matches.

Manager Thomas Tuchel's tactics have come under heavy scrutiny, particularly his substitutions and a defensive approach in the closing stages that critics say invited Argentine pressure. Former England striker Wayne Rooney was among the most vocal critics, branding the changes "asking for trouble" and arguing they were directly responsible for England surrendering their advantage. The defeat has triggered wider debate about Tuchel's conservative in-game management and his position going forward, with no fresh developments emerging since the immediate post-match fallout.
