England began their Commonwealth Games netball campaign with an emphatic 83-34 Pool A victory over Northern Ireland in Glasgow. The result gives the Roses a confident start despite a disrupted build-up, and provides useful squad experience before their much tougher match against reigning champions Australia.

England led 24-7 early on and rotated their full 12-player squad in the second half, with Eleanor Cardwell scoring 35 from 37 attempts after coming on. Ten England players were making their Commonwealth Games debuts, while injuries ruled out Helen Housby and Natalie Metcalf and interim coach Anna Stembridge is leading the side following Jess Thirlby's departure in March. Australia, who beat Tonga 99-38, face England at 11:00 BST on Sunday.
