England women’s World Cup hopes end at group stage

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

England's women hockey team have been eliminated from World Cup contention after finishing third in their four-team group following a goalless draw with India. The result means head coach David Ralph's side drop into a classification round for teams placed ninth to sixteenth, rather than advancing to the knockout stages, continuing a run without a major tournament breakthrough since Commonwealth gold in 2022.

England began the tournament well, beating South Africa 4-0, but then suffered a 4-2 defeat to China, with Tess Howard and Sophie Hamilton scoring in a losing effort. They finished on four points, level with two sides who progressed. The team will now play Chile and Japan in their classification pool. In contrast, England's men have topped their own group with three wins from three, including an 8-2 victory over Wales, and progress to a second-stage pool alongside India as they chase a semi-final spot. Both World Cups are being staged across Wavre in Belgium and Amstelveen in the Netherlands.

  • England women drew 0-0 with India, finishing third in their group
  • They miss the knockout stage, entering a 9th-16th classification round
  • England men, by contrast, topped their pool with three wins
