## Key points

- James practised his golf swing during the anthem.
- Trump criticised the conduct on social media.
- The article argues ESPN’s headline softened the description.

## Summary

LeBron James practised his golf swing while the US national anthem played before his Philadelphia 76ers debut, prompting President Donald Trump to criticise him on social media. The article disputes ESPN’s description of the incident as James “not standing still”, arguing that the wording downplayed what he was doing.

The article says James also practised his swing during the anthem on Christmas Day the previous year, and contrasts his actions with athletes who have explained kneeling as protest. It adds that James turns 42 in December and averaged 15 points across his first two games of the season, then argues his conduct and declining play could affect his value to the NBA. These assessments are the article’s opinions.
