Former Aston Villa and Manchester United goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer has died aged 78. A European Cup winner with both clubs, he was a central figure in Aston Villa’s most successful modern period, helping them win the First Division in 1980-81 and reach the 1982 European Cup final.

Rimmer was on Manchester United’s bench for their 1968 European Cup final victory over Benfica, then started Villa’s 1-0 final win against Bayern Munich in 1982 before a neck injury forced him off after nine minutes. He made 229 league appearances for Villa, earned one England cap in 1976, and also played for Arsenal and Swansea City; both Villa and United said they were deeply saddened by his death.
