European playoffs: Rangers scrape first-leg win as Brighton draw in Norway

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

Rangers, Brighton and Hearts all took part in the first legs of their European playoff ties, with mixed results on a mixed night for the Scottish and English clubs. Rangers scraped a narrow 1-0 win over Czech side Jablonec at Ibrox despite finishing the match with 10 men, while Brighton were held to a goalless draw away to Norwegian side Tromsø, and Hearts drew 2-2 at home to Rapid Vienna in a Conference League playoff tie that remains finely balanced.

Ryan Naderi scored the only goal for Rangers in the 50th minute, but substitute Cammy Devlin was sent off in the 78th minute, leaving Derek McInnes's side to hold on with a numerical disadvantage. Brighton, preparing to open their Premier League season against Aston Villa, could not beat Tromsø goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard despite debutant Ibrahim Osman impressing. Hearts saw James Wilson's 30-yard strike put them ahead before Rapid Vienna equalised late through Nikolaus Wumbrand. Elsewhere, Hibernian drew 0-0 at Gent, Motherwell lost 3-1 at home to Freiburg after having a player sent off, and Larne beat 10-man Lincoln Red Imps 2-0 in Gibraltar.
