Actor Evan Rachel Wood has said she is "sad" not to have been asked to return for "Practical Magic 2", the upcoming sequel to the 1998 film, despite having offered to reprise her role. Speaking at the premiere of her new series "The Shards", Wood said she felt the recasting was a missed opportunity, as the original child cast had bonded and their real-life history would have added authenticity for adult versions of the characters.

Wood played Kylie Owens, daughter of Sandra Bullock's character, alongside Alexandra Artrip as her sister; in the sequel, out 11 September, Joey King and Maisie Williams take on those roles instead, while Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest return. The new film is based on Alice Hoffman's novel "The Book of Magic", and Wood said reading it convinced her the producers were not following its story, adding that she had previously offered to appear even briefly but was told the roles were being recast. Wood, who was 11 when the original film came out, now stars in FX's "The Shards", premiering 5 August.
