A man accused of pushing a 77-year-old commuter onto New York City subway tracks was removed from court on Monday after clashing angrily with the judge during his hearing. Derrick Mills, 52, is charged with assault after allegedly shoving Trevor Crawford onto the tracks of the 6 line in September 2023, an attack the judge described as an "unprovoked violent act" following her review of security footage.

The 2023 incident occurred at the 68th Street-Hunter College station, where Mills allegedly grew angry after Crawford, on his way home from work, made eye contact with him. MTA staff pulled Crawford to safety before a train arrived, though he suffered five shattered ribs and pelvic injuries; Mills fled but was later identified by a member of the public and arrested. At Monday's hearing, Mills disputed the footage shown to the court and grew increasingly agitated, prompting Judge Julieta Lozano to have him removed by court officers. He has pleaded not guilty and is due to stand trial on 27 October.
