Ex-Australia batter Warner pleads guilty to drink driving

BBC Sport · 6 hours ago

Former Australia cricketer David Warner has pleaded guilty to drink driving after being charged following a random breath test in Sydney in April. The plea, which had been expected, comes after his lawyer said in May that Warner accepted responsibility for what he called a "foolish" and "reckless" decision, and it puts the spotlight on the ex-international, who remains a prominent figure in domestic and franchise cricket.

Warner had drunk three glasses of wine at a friend's flat before driving on Easter Sunday, his lawyer told an earlier hearing. Sentencing is set for 18 August, when he faces a minimum six-month driving ban, a fine of up to A$2,200 (£1,150) and a possible prison term of up to nine months. Warner, who retired from international cricket in 2024, currently captains Sydney Thunder and Pakistan Super League side Karachi Kings; Cricket NSW said it took the matter "very seriously".
