Garver contrasted Gary Cole's Bill Davis with Brian Keith's original portrayal, saying Cole was a fine actor but lacked Keith's blend of tough, ex-Marine exterior and tender fatherliness. She was similarly critical of Tim Curry's take on butler Mr French, calling it "loud and boisterous" and closer to "the Tim Curry show" than a sitcom performance, unlike Sebastian Cabot's low-key, love-driven original. Garver said the 1966 series succeeded because its cast conveyed genuine familial affection, it was a groundbreaking premise for its era, it was filmed in colour with film-industry talent behind it, and its relatable stories about coping with family problems still resonate today.
