Uber has been ordered to pay $40 million to the parents of Emily Normandin-Parker, 23, who was fatally struck by a car in California in August 2023. Her driver allegedly made her and friend Luna Moore leave the vehicle after Moore vomited, while arguing about a cleaning fee; an arbitrator found Uber legally responsible, despite the company arguing the driver was an independent contractor.

Normandin-Parker’s parents were awarded $20 million each, while Moore received $300,000 from her separate damages claim. Uber disagreed with the decision, and the family says it rejected an earlier settlement containing restrictions on publicly discussing the case; they have since established a foundation promoting corporate accountability and stronger rideshare safety regulations.
