Writer and collector Jonny Trunk has published a new book, Fancy an Ice Cream? A Collection of Vintage Ice Lolly Wrappers, showcasing rare British ice lolly packaging from roughly 1970 to 1980. The 96-page collection draws largely on the hoard of the late John Townsend, a lifelong ephemera collector from Stockport whose five-bedroom house was crammed with decades of packaging, and it has already won admiration from figures such as film director Edgar Wright, who called it "my dream book".

The wrappers feature both enduring names like Feast, Fab, Mini Milk and Nobbly Bobbly, and long-forgotten, era-specific designs tied to Kevin Keegan, Star Wars, Doctor Who's Daleks and Happy Days' Fonzie. Trunk, 60, says the appeal is roughly 75% nostalgia and 25% design interest, with the wrappers' clashing colours and now-lost graphic styles evoking a period he pinpoints as peaking around 1972-75, when getting an ice lolly felt like a rare treat.
