The speculation gained traction after Rockstar Games released a new GTA 6 trailer and screenshots ahead of its record-breaking preorders, prompting fans to scrutinise every frame for hidden clues. It matters chiefly as a reflection of how deeply invested Rockstar's community is, though the theory remains unproven and the studio has generally kept the two franchises as separate continuities.

The theory rests largely on the perceived physical resemblance between Jason and Arthur, with fans pointing to similar jawlines, noses, eyes and rugged expressions. The roughly 120-year gap between Red Dead Redemption 2 (set in 1899) and the modern-day GTA 6 leaves room for several generations.
