Father of Aussie girl shot dead by police in Pakistan accuses officers of corruption

Daily Mail · 1 month ago

The father of a nine-year-old Perth schoolgirl who was allegedly shot dead by police in Pakistan has accused officers of corruption, claiming he was forced to sign a blank document before he could receive medical treatment. Hania Ahmad was killed on 10 June when Crime Control Department officers opened fire on the family's rental car in Chakwal, Punjab, wrongly believing the vehicle belonged to robbers who had just held the family up. The case has prompted a formal complaint and an official inquiry, raising serious questions about police conduct.

Hania had been travelling with her father Adeel Ahmad, her mother Dr Sidra Khan and her brother Aafan to visit relatives when two robbers confronted them and demanded jewellery, taking around $7,500 worth of belongings. A police officer exchanged fire with the suspects, who fled on a motorcycle, but as the family drove away further officers arrived and shot at their car, mistaking it for the robbers' getaway vehicle. Hania was killed, while her father and brother were wounded and required surgery; her mother was unhurt. The local district police office has since launched a "fact-finding inquiry" after Mr Ahmad lodged his formal complaint.
