Father-Son Stage Collabs Are Stealing the Show During Train’s Summer Tour With Barenaked Ladies

Train and Barenaked Ladies are both featuring father-son musical pairings during their joint 2026 North American tour, Drops of Jupiter: 25 Years in the Atmosphere. Train frontman Pat Monahan's 14-year-old son Rock joins him nightly to sing and play guitar, while Barenaked Ladies' Ed Robertson performs alongside his 26-year-old son Lyle, who plays guitar, bass, keyboards and backing vocals. Both fathers speak warmly about the experience, and the arrangement has also let Barenaked Ladies perform as a five-piece for the first time since Stephen Page's departure in 2009.

Rock Monahan performs covers of Journey's "Stone in Love" and Dirty Heads' "Vacation" alongside Train's own "Save Me, San Francisco". Lyle Robertson was originally brought in as a stand-by substitute for bassist Jim Creeggan following a family bereavement, but was kept on full-time after the band decided to make use of his versatility. Pat Monahan praised his son's maturity and stage presence, while Ed Robertson said the extra live player has enriched songs such as "Falling for the First Time" and "Brian Wilson". The two sons have also bonded off-stage during the tour.
