## Key points

- A 2016 inquiry reportedly found evidence supporting disputed marriage allegations.
- Prosecutors said possible charges were outside the five-year limit.
- A 2019 review found insufficient evidence of wrongdoing.

## Summary

New reporting says an FBI and Homeland Security investigation in 2016 found evidence supporting allegations that Representative Ilhan Omar’s marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi may have been a sham and that Elmi may have been her brother. The findings have renewed scrutiny of Omar’s immigration history, though the allegations remain disputed and Omar denies wrongdoing.

The investigation stalled after prosecutors concluded that possible charges fell outside the five-year statute of limitations. A separate 2019 review found insufficient evidence of wrongdoing and no problems with Omar’s naturalisation. Current investigators are also examining questions about her birth year, her father’s immigration records and whether he misrepresented information on immigration paperwork.
