## Key points

- Six people died in a Brooklyn residential fire.
- FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore was at a Puerto Rico conference.
- She said her first deputy was managing the response.

## Summary

FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore was in Puerto Rico for the annual Somos political conference when a fire killed six people in Brooklyn. Her absence drew scrutiny, though she said her first deputy was handling the response and that she did not need to return to New York.

The fire began shortly before 2am in a two-storey residential building on 58th Street in Sunset Park. Four people died at the scene and two more died while being taken to hospital. Bonsignore urged families and neighbours to learn how to respond to fires; the mayor’s administration had approved sending several city officials to the conference, where fire commissioners rarely attend.
