Cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid up to ten times more potent than fentanyl, is rapidly spreading across the United States and claiming lives in increasing numbers. The drug differs critically from other opioids in that standard fentanyl test strips cannot detect it, and it overwhelms Narcan (naloxone), the usual emergency antidote. This combination has devastated families, including those of 16-year-old Dante in San Francisco and 18-year-old Jake in Oklahoma, prompting bereaved parents to warn the public of its lethality.

Federal drug officials have linked cychlorphine to at least 55 deaths nationwide across at least 18 states, with particularly high concentrations in Ohio, Texas and Tennessee; the Knox County Regional Forensic Centre in Tennessee alone has documented 41 overdose deaths in the past year. Experts caution that these figures significantly underestimate the true toll, as conventional toxicology screening frequently fails to identify the drug. Cychlorphine was originally developed decades ago in a European laboratory but rejected for medical use owing to its extreme potency; the manufacturing recipe has since resurfaced on the internet, enabling clandestine chemists to produce it, with much of the supply believed to originate from cartel-operated laboratories in Mexico using precursor chemicals from China.
